Peggy Baker has been a vivid presence in contemporary dance for five decades, performing internationally with Lar Lubovitch, Mark Morris, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Doug Varone, Tere O’Connor, Molissa Fenley, and Charles Moulton (New York); Fortier Danse-Creation (Montreal); and Toronto Dance Theatre, Dancemakers and James Kudelka (Toronto). She established Peggy Baker Dance Projects in 1990, and for the first 20 years she dedicated herself to solo performance, garnering rapturous praise for the eloquence and depth of her dancing and accolades for her collaborative partnerships with extraordinary choreographers, directors, musicians, and designers. Beginning in 2010 she expanded her choreographic range to works for small ensemble. Over its 33-year history, Peggy Baker Dance Projects was presented in theatres, art galleries, and public spaces across Canada and the U.S. (including Los Angeles, Jacob’s Pillow, and multiple venues in New York City), as well as Mexico, Argentina, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Korea, and Japan.
Under the banner The Choreographer’s Trust Ms. Baker has published a series of booklet/DVD sets that document six of her landmark solos. She is the subject of a book by Carol Anderson, Unfold – a Portrait of Peggy Baker, published by Dance Collection Danse, and her evening-length work who we are in the dark is the subject of the documentary film Dancing Darkness by V. Tony Hauser.
Among her many honours: The.Order of Canada, the Carsen Prize, the Premiere’s Award, the Governor General’s Award, The Eldred Family Dance Award, Honorary Doctorates from York University and the University of Calgary, and six Dora Mavor Moore Awards. A 2023 inductee into the Dance Collection Danse Hall of Fame, she is the long-serving Artist-in-Residence at Canada’s National Ballet School. Since the closure of her company Ms. Baker continues to teach, create, produce, and perform as an independent artist.
